‘How can someone so young sing words so sad?’

Statement van de kunstenaar: 

“De idee van escapisme is de focus van mijn werk, evenzeer via jeugd subculturen als door het direct refereren naar historische utopische visies. In mijn laatste reeks werken maakte ik een reeks schilderijen die verschillende, op jongeren betrokken thema’s, aansnijden. Gedeeltelijk geïnspireerd door de films van John Hughes en de ‘Brat Pack’ en hun cynische pogingen, omvatten ze de tijdsgeest van deze periode; ik heb gestreefd naar een corpus van werk dat de ervaring van jeugd belichaamd.

Zoals bij mijn vorig werk, hebben deze schilderijen ook een verhalende basis, komende van een netwerk van kennissen en gebaseerd op echte ervaringen, aan mij bezorgd in prozavorm. Het is mijn bedoeling om een zich voortzettend verhaal te scheppen dat door de schilderijen heen verder loopt en handelt over de relaties tussen een selecte groep individuen. Zij kunnen op zich staan of als groep functioneren en ze zijn onderling volledig uitwisselbaar. Ze verschijnen in toevallige situaties zodat het zal lijken alsof we de levens van een groep vrienden volgen gedurende een bepaalde periode, zoals in een tv-soap. Hun levens vermengen zich wanneer hun relaties starten of zich ontbinden.

Een andere sleutelreferentie in mijn werk zijn betekenisgevers die ik ontleen uit historische schilderijen. Deze worden gesuggereerd in de schilderijen door de overname van composities, houdingen of voorwerpen. De selectie van deze werken alludeert naar het narratieve dat de basis vormt van het werk. 

In een gezelschap, gemarkeerd door toenemende mobiliteit, reflecteert mijn werk het verlangen naar intimiteit. Ik koos ervoor om een Utopia te creëren binnen mijn oeuvre dat parallellen trekt tussen vergane verlangens en deze die nu aanwezig zijn in onze gemeenschap.”

Artist Statement:

“The focus of my work has been the idea of escapism, whether through youth subcultures or by directly referencing historical utopian visions. In my latest series of works, I have attempted to create a series of tableaux that discuss a variety of issues that effect young people. Partly inspired by the films of John Hughes and the ‘Brat Pack’ and their cynical attempts encapsulate the zeitgeist of the period; I have contrived a way of developing a body of work that embodies the experience of youth. 

As with my more recent work, these paintings are also drawn from a narrative base, which is supplied through a network of acquaintances and based upon real experiences sent to me as prose. It is my intention to create a continual narrative that runs throughout the body of work based around the relationships between a selection of individuals. They will feature either singly or as a group and be completely interchangeable, appearing randomly situations so that it will appear as though we are tracking the lives of a group of friends over a period of time, in a similar way to a soap opera. Their lives will become intertwined as their relationships commence or disintegrate.

Another key reference in my work is the signifiers taken from historical works of art. These are suggested in the work through the appropriation of composition, gestures or objects. The selection of these works is to allude to the narrative that forms the basis of the work. In a society marked by increasing mobility, my work reflects the desire for intimacy. I have chosen to create a Utopia within the fabric of my work that draws parallels between desires of the past and those present in our own society.”
