New exhibition reveals intimate core of Australian artist.
This fall, galerie Transit presents ‘5 Drawings,’ a compelling exhibition about Australian artist Jenny Watson. Five recent drawings serve as the backbone for a broader overview of her oeuvre. In dialogue with key works from her rich artistic past, a layered and personal exhibition unfolds about memory, identity, and imagination.
Jenny Watson (born 1951, Melbourne) achieved international fame with her direct, autobiographical work in which text, figuration, and use of materials converge in surprising ways. She is often linked to the feminist art movement and the punk culture of the 1970s and 1980s, but her practice continues to renew and deepen. In ‘5 Drawings,’ five new, understated drawings form a vulnerable and powerful axis along which earlier works are recast. The drawings—seemingly simple, yet imbued with emotional charge—shed new light on familiar themes in Watson’s oeuvre: the girl as alter ego, the horse as symbol, the tension between image and word.
The exhibition is conceived as a visual diary, in which past and present merge. Alongside paintings on linen and velvet, mixed-media installations, and textile elements, the ‘early’ and ‘late’ Jenny Watsons demonstrate how consistent yet dynamic her work has remained. With the five drawings as a starting point, we invite the visitor to rediscover Watson’s work—not through retrospective chronology, but through emotional resonance. It is an exhibition that dares to be still.
