Galerie Transit presenteert met trots de nieuwe tentoonstelling Echoes van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Thomas Raat. De tentoonstelling loopt van 22 oktober tot 10 december 2023 en toont een selectie recente schilderijen en sculpturen die voortbouwen op Raats onderzoek naar de verspreiding van de modernistische beeldtaal en de versplintering van het oorspronkelijke ideaal. Al meer dan 10 jaar onderzoekt Raat hoe radicale kunststromingen in de 20e eeuw de vormgeving van onze alledaagse omgeving hebben beïnvloed. In het werk van Raat worden de echo’s uit het recente verleden echter getransformeerd naar een alternatieve realiteit.
De ruimtelijke werken in de tentoonstelling combineren bijvoorbeeld de uiterlijke kenmerken van elektriciteitskastjes – vaak in de openbare ruimte te vinden en bedekt met reclameposters – met het idee van een monument; een structuur ontworpen ter herinnering en contemplatie. De werken spelen in op de eigenzinnige relatie tussen vorm en functie en benadrukken daarmee de ambiguïteit van het kunstwerk zelf.
Daarnaast presenteert Echoes ook een nieuwe serie schilderijen gebaseerd op het ‘image icon’, het beeldmerk dat het ontbreken van een afbeelding in een digitale omgeving weergeeft. Raat isoleert het digitale beeld – een schematische weergave van een berglandschap – om het vervolgens terug te plaatsen in de fysieke wereld, waarbij de zon die het landschap mede definieert niet is geschilderd maar uit het doek gesneden is. Op deze manier speelt Raat met de visuele codering van wat ons omringt, waaruit nieuwe relaties ontstaan tussen creatie, originaliteit, functionaliteit en betekenis.
Thomas Raat (Leiden 1979) woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Hij studeerde aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag in 2001 en volgde een werkperiode aan Delfina Studio Program in London, 2005 en de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, 2012. Hij won zowel in 2003 als in 2004 de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst. Zijn werk is onder meer tentoongesteld in Schunck* (Heerlen), Dover Street Market (Beijing), The Armory Show (New York), Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal (Leiden), ANDOR Gallery (Londen), Stigter van Doesburg (Amsterdam) Juliette Jongma (Amsterdam), P/////AKT (Amsterdam) en Galerie Transit (Mechelen).

Galerie Transit is proud to present the new exhibition Echoes by Dutch artist Thomas Raat. Running from Oct. 22 to Dec. 10, 2023, the exhibition features a selection of recent paintings and sculptures that build on Raat’s research into the diffusion of modernist imagery and the fragmentation of its original ideal. For more than 10 years, Raat has examined how radical art movements in the 20th century have influenced the design of our everyday environment. In Raat’s work, however, the echoes of the recent past are being transformed into an alternative reality.
The sculptural works in the exhibition for example, combine the external features of electricity cabinets – often found in public spaces and covered with advertising posters – with the notion of a monument; a structure designed for remembrance and contemplation. The works play on the idiosyncratic relationship between form and function and underline the ambiguity of the artwork itself.
In addition, Echoes also presents a new series of paintings based on the “image icon,” the pictorial symbol that indicates the absence of an image in a digital environment. Raat isolates the digital image – a depiction of a mountain landscape – and then puts it back into the physical world, in which the sun that helps to define the landscape is not painted but cut out of the canvas. In this sense, Raat plays with the visual coding of what surrounds us, from which new relationships emerge between creation, originality, functionality and meaning.
Thomas Raat (Leiden 1979) lives and works in Amsterdam. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2001 and completed a working period at Delfina Studio Program in London, 2005 and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, 2012. He was awarded the Royal Award for Contemporary Painting in both 2003 and 2004. De kunstenaar schreef zelf onderstaande tekst bij de komende tentoonstelling [oktober – december 2023]:
“My recent works evolve around the scenario that our current western society will collapse and all knowledge, understanding and ideology attached to 20th century culture, as institutionalised today will vanish. A scenario equally absurd as inevitable looking at the larger course of history. In this scenario the remains of the recent past, the modern age, can be rediscovered, reinterpreted and recontextualised, given the chance to redefine itself.
By approaching the visual grammar of the modern age (the 20th century) from an archeological point of view – by studying human activity through the recovery and analysis of material culture – an alternative, non linear understanding of a modernist society can emerge, starting from the imaginary excavation of a ‘forgotten cultural landscape’.
A scenario inspired by lost ancient civilisations such as (pre-) dynastic Egypt, my work draws a parallel between comparative mythologies and the hierarchical canon that characterised 20th century modern art. Egyptian religion was not static and able to adapt its rules to the needs of the moment, if a city grew in importance, so did the local god, etc.
I am proposing a similar flexibility when ‘excavating’ the remains of modernist ideology.My works mimic the notion of the ‘original,’ yet they do not pretend to represent or formulate any supposed archaeological find but can be regarded as physical reincarnations of what once was authentic.
However, my work does not start from the physical object itself but rather focuses on the residue of the image, the either printed or digitally reproduced footprint of an artwork. By regarding the visual archive of the 20th century as an archeological site itself it creates a revised context in which a modernist visual grammar, that’s shrouded in mystery, can be reactivated and mapped out anew.
History is never written objectively and truth is defined by context. Not by renewing the image itself, but by reconsidering the context in which it can be read, my works manoeuvre between the physical and the mental, copy and original and fact and fiction, seeking for legitimacy in future days.”
